How to Design a Website

It takes technical skills to create a website, and designing a website takes special skills as well. But, there are ways you can help your website designer and developer.

Logo, Pictures, Graphics. Have your logo professionally designed and provide colors as well as fonts to your designer for brand consistency. Invest in quality brand photography. Have your headshot as well as product photography done. Lastly, provide your designer with graphics designed using your brand image. With all of these design elements in place, this will make the process easier for you as well as for your designer.

Design Ideas. Which websites do you visit often? Do you like their look? Is it easy for you to navigate? Maybe you like the animation on one website, but the contact us page on another site. Take some time to review other websites, including your competitors'. If you find something you like about a website in a different industry, make note of that.

Share Your Ideas. Communication is key to getting what you want when designing your website. Let your designer know what you like and don’t like. For example, if you like the way the header looks, say that. If you don’t like the animation, say that too. Remember, your website is your website.

Investing in a website is an expense. It’s the face of your business that’s open 24-hours a day, 7 days a week. Some people may find your business on Facebook or a business card, but everyone has access to the internet, which gives them access to your website, business, products and services.

Announcing: Oasis Responsive Website Builder

Are you looking for a responsive website that meets the needs of your business? Let me introduce you to our new Oasis Website Builder.  The Oasis Website Builder is a complete solution to create a website that works smoothly on desktop, tablet and mobile devices.

With over 100 new templates, each can be customized to match your brand. Each

template is built for responsive design. Responsive sites allow creators to customize content for each device size and tailor the visitor’s experience based on the device they’re using. Google predominantly uses the mobile version of the content for indexing and ranking; therefore, a responsive site design may enhance search rankings.

The Oasis Website Builder not only allows you to change the way your content displays on each device, it also sends as little data as necessary to each device. As a result, smaller devices don’t need to load (and then hide) content that you only want your visitors to see on a larger screen. It also allows you to customize content not only based on the device it’s being viewed, but in some cases based on the date, geolocation, site visit or other variables of your choice!

Google Algorithm Updates

In November 2019 and January 2020 Google updated their algorithm. These updates had significant impacts on search engine results. Everyone knows that Google routinely makes small changes to their search engine algorithm, and they occasionally make significant changes as well called Core Updates.

Google’s new algorithm measures a website’s relevancy differently than before and this changes every website’s search engine performance for desired keywords.

The key to ranking well on search engines is to remain focused on providing content that is the most helpful to consumers.

Keep the following in mind when creating content:
·         Is the content original and helpful?
·         Is the content well-researched?
·         Is it well written and error-free?
·         Does it provide value?

Content is just one piece of the new Google algorithm update. There is another criteria called First Glance. This addresses unique pages on your website including your About Us page, links to listings, review sites, and other industry-related websites.

Google, like all other technology, is constantly changing and evolving, as should your website. Call for a FREE demo on how we can help your website rank better. Every business wants to be at the top of a Google Search, but you have to know how to make it happen.

As always, if your website if icky, call Rikki!

Keeping up With the Content

Maintaining your website and keeping things current online can seem like a daunting task. It's important to keep your content up to date, your customers informed on new products and services, and enhance your websites SEO value. You may need to update one page on your website, go through an entire rebrand, or possibly your website is no longer contemporary. No matter the reason why you need to update your website, I recommend you do it on a monthly basis (at minimum). So, the way I recommend you do this is by taking one page at a time.

Start with the subpages. Subpages are the pages that contain the details of your products and services. Maybe you recently added a new product to your business and this product may or may not be featured on it's own page. Try to have as much content for our visitors as possible and offer them the possibility to experience content in whatever medium they're most comfortable with, whether it's text, graphics or video.
Both graphics and video are important to branding your products or services. Not only do you want to show images of your products in different environments or different angle, you also want to provide those images in a way that it represents your brand colors and business mission.
Develop a plan for content management. The most efficient way to manage your website content, technology, and features is with a plan. Your plan should include: priorities, content messaging, workflow, and deadlines.
No matter if your website is big or small, eCommerce or strictly blogs, don’t let it sit stagnant without anything fresh or new to offer your customers. As always, if your website is icky, call Rikki!

After you launch your website, the next step is typically Search Engine Optimization (SEO) and Search Engine Marketing (SEM) or Google Adwords. Next question, what is it and what’s the difference?

How Often Should I Update My Website?

Websites are like the fashion industry. Fashion trends change from season to season and your website needs to keep up with the trends. A website that looked modern and fresh a few years ago can easily look out of date today.

For instance, with Google’s mobile search focused on responsive websites, our client Time for Travel came to us and asked us to switch their design from “mobile friendly” to responsive. Responsive design is an approach to web design that makes web pages render well on a variety of devices and window or screen sizes. They wanted to display beautiful images of travel while their customers could navigate the full functionality of the site.

The most important factor is deciding if your website needs replacing is the overall look and feel of it. Some websites are informational and once the words or pictures are updated, the site still provides the look you are trying to achieve.

Other factors that may indicate it’s time for a website upgrade or replacement are:
  • Out-of-date security measures
  • Your site isn’t responsive to different sized screens
  • Low-quality SEO
  • Any of your content is out of date
  • You want to add an online store
  • You don’t have any clear Call to Action
  • Unclear navigation
  • Slow loading times
  • You want to add any kind of integration, such as a newsletter signup

If any of these factors resonate with you, I’d be happy to chat and see how we can make your website reflect who you are today. As always, if your website is icky, call Rikki! (443) 871-9227.

Why You Shouldn’t Hire a Teenager to Manage Your Social Media: 4 Reasons Teenagers Don’t Make Good Social Media Managers

As the owner of a busy company, social media can become just one more thing you have to fit in.
This is why many business owners decide to hire someone to manage their social media for them. This person is usually responsible for all aspects of social media – and sometimes content marketing as well. Their tasks and responsibilities may include:
·         Regularly creating new blog posts
·         Managing the company’s online community
·         Coming up with new content to share on social media
·         Monitoring relevant conversations on social media
·         Answering questions/responding to comments

Often, the social media manager will also be responsible for higher-level tasks like coming up with a social media strategy and getting your business in front of your target audience.
Not surprisingly then, it isn’t cheap to hire a dedicated, experienced social media manager. According to PayScale.com, the average annual salary for a full-time social media manager is around $47,000…and this doesn’t include benefits and bonuses!

In order to cut costs, some business owners decide to hire an internet-savvy teenager to manage their accounts. After all, they are on their phones all the time and know how social media works, right? Sometimes it’s a nephew who’s great with computers, or a local high school student who’s a whiz with social media. In any case, they tend to have one thing in common: they’re CHEAP! But, as in all areas of life, we often get what we pay for. Webgirl Technology has identified 4 major reasons not to hire a teenager:
1.      Social media experience doesn’t equal business or marketing experience.
While many teens are great at knowing the ins and outs of various social media platforms or how to change the background on an iPhone, this doesn’t make them business or marketing experts.Using social media for business purposes is FAR different than using it as an individual user!
An experienced social media manager will know how to:
·         Use social media to meet specific business goals
·         Use the business-related functions of different platforms (analytics, social ads, etc.)
·         Monitor the ROI of social media campaigns
·         Optimize accounts/posts for SEO
·         Target specific demographics

Let’s take a look at the scenario below.  This is an actual exchange between myself and a client:
Client:  I’d like to hire you for some consulting.  I’d like to have my 16 year old there as well.  He’s always on his phone tweeting and using social media.
Webgirl: Does your teenager help you run your business?
Client:  No
Webgirl:  Do they know your brand?
Client:  No
Webgirl:  Do they introduce you to business prospects?
Client:  No
Webgirl:  Do they go to your meetings and meet your customers?
Client:  No

Given the answers to the exchange above does this sound like someone you would hire to represent your business?  Managing a Facebook Business page is much different than having a personal Facebook accountThis holds true for every single social media platform:  Facebook, LinkedIn, Instagram, Twitter and more.

Social Media marketing skills require lots of business experience and training.

2.      Consistency is key with social media management.
Fully understanding how a brand works and what it stands for can take a long time. For this reason, anyone you hire to run your social media should be willing to commit for the long term.
So, what happens when your teenage social media manager graduates high school or wants to take the summer off to hang out with friends?
Training someone to represent your brand online is a big investment of time and money. Hire someone who’s willing to commit to the job for at least a few years, or you could be back to square one sooner than you’d like.

3.      A social media manager must be able to handle social media crises like a professional.
When everything’s going well, a teen may be able to competently handle basic social media tasks. However, if things start to go sideways, you need someone in there who knows exactly what to do, what to say, and how to react.
Take this well-known social media snafu as an example: A Red Cross employee accidentally posted a personal tweet from to the organization’s official Twitter account. It read:
Ryan found two more 4 bottle packs of Dogfish Head’s Midas Touch beer… when we drink we do it right #gettngslizzerd”
Fortunately, Red Cross didn’t miss a beat.

One has to wonder if an inexperienced teen could have come up with such a direct, clever and humorous response!
4.      Your social media manager needs to be on top of industry and platform changes.
Social media management isn’t just about posting random updates on Facebook or Twitter. What you post and how you post it can be greatly impacted by changes in your industry and in the individual platforms you use.
Is your teenage social media manager likely to monitor what’s happening in your industry? To follow industry sites, attend workshops, etc.? Is he or she likely to pay attention to major shifts on platforms? To know which ones your audience is most likely to be on? To stay on top of changes, new rules, policies or guidelines?
Your social media manager is the face and voice of your brand online. This is a HUGE responsibility!  An inexperienced teen is far more likely to behave or respond in ways that aren’t flattering to your brand.
For instance, what if a disgruntled customer makes a particularly mean or rude remark? An experienced social media manager will have faced this many times before, and will know exactly how to respond to diffuse the situation. A teen, however, may be more likely to respond quickly and without the appropriate level of professionalism.
And since social media posts have a way of sticking around – even if you delete them – the impact of an unprofessional post or comment can impact your business for a very long time! We hope this information has convinced you that hiring a teenager to manage your social media just isn’t a great choice. The benefits (namely, the low cost) don’t even come close to outweighing the risks.
