Google Algorithm Updates

In November 2019 and January 2020 Google updated their algorithm. These updates had significant impacts on search engine results. Everyone knows that Google routinely makes small changes to their search engine algorithm, and they occasionally make significant changes as well called Core Updates.

Google’s new algorithm measures a website’s relevancy differently than before and this changes every website’s search engine performance for desired keywords.

The key to ranking well on search engines is to remain focused on providing content that is the most helpful to consumers.

Keep the following in mind when creating content:
·         Is the content original and helpful?
·         Is the content well-researched?
·         Is it well written and error-free?
·         Does it provide value?

Content is just one piece of the new Google algorithm update. There is another criteria called First Glance. This addresses unique pages on your website including your About Us page, links to listings, review sites, and other industry-related websites.

Google, like all other technology, is constantly changing and evolving, as should your website. Call for a FREE demo on how we can help your website rank better. Every business wants to be at the top of a Google Search, but you have to know how to make it happen.

As always, if your website if icky, call Rikki!

How Often Should I Update My Website?

Websites are like the fashion industry. Fashion trends change from season to season and your website needs to keep up with the trends. A website that looked modern and fresh a few years ago can easily look out of date today.

For instance, with Google’s mobile search focused on responsive websites, our client Time for Travel came to us and asked us to switch their design from “mobile friendly” to responsive. Responsive design is an approach to web design that makes web pages render well on a variety of devices and window or screen sizes. They wanted to display beautiful images of travel while their customers could navigate the full functionality of the site.

The most important factor is deciding if your website needs replacing is the overall look and feel of it. Some websites are informational and once the words or pictures are updated, the site still provides the look you are trying to achieve.

Other factors that may indicate it’s time for a website upgrade or replacement are:
  • Out-of-date security measures
  • Your site isn’t responsive to different sized screens
  • Low-quality SEO
  • Any of your content is out of date
  • You want to add an online store
  • You don’t have any clear Call to Action
  • Unclear navigation
  • Slow loading times
  • You want to add any kind of integration, such as a newsletter signup

If any of these factors resonate with you, I’d be happy to chat and see how we can make your website reflect who you are today. As always, if your website is icky, call Rikki! (443) 871-9227.

Well, if you engage in any type of Internet Marketing, you’ve probably heard of Facebook Live. Facebook Live allows your business to engage with your followers in real time. It can help your business by giving customers a better understanding of the products and services you offer.

Facebook Live engages customers with a media they love….video. Broadcasts can be on a variety of topics. Some ideas might be a behind the scenes look at your co mpany’s operations. Or, if your business is hosting a special event, you can invite your customers who can’t attend in person, to join in the conversation online. It’s about involving your target audience. Writing Great Content for Your Website

One of the most common questions we hear from our customers is “How can I make my website better and more appealing to customers?” Whether it comes from our long term customers just looking to improve their website or a brand new customer just getting started with us, the answer is content.  Quality content can help to make your website stand out from your competition, both to potentially customers as well as Google.

A website that contains a large volume of information about its products and services can inspire confidence in consumers. This makes them far more likely to purchase from you than from a competitor.   In browsing the internet for the best deals on products we have all come across a website that appears on the surface to have what we need. However the website may look dated, or lacks vital information about the product. The product picture may be right, but without a product description or other vital information you are left wondering if that product is really the one you want. If the site appears very old, infrequently updated, or has very little other information the customer is left without confidence the company will be able to deliver the product as described. Many people faced with this reality would choose another website to purchase from, even if the product costs a bit more.

The good news is that you, or someone in your organization is often the best source to generate that content. You know your product.  As a business owner you chose to make your product your livelihood and know far more about it than the average consumer. Throughout your time as a business professional you have likely fielded any number of questions from potential customers about your products. You may think that talking about your product is boring, or that none of your customers would ever care about that information. The reality is the complete opposite.
Modern customers are educated. They want to know as much as they can about the product. While they may not want to know one particular piece of information right now, they want to know that information is out there. They want to know if they have questions about your product you can answer them. A customer seeing a large amount of information on a product may skim to make sure you have the right size, or use a certain material, or to see if any other information is available. In skimming through your content they gain confidence in you as a seller, the more knowledge you display to them about your product. If they are reassured you know your product, they feel more confident purchasing from you.

Finally, content is one of the best ways to increase your exposure on Google by improving your search results. Outside of Ads, Google’s business is to serve users quality search results.  By serving quality results people come back to Google, and continue to use it to find what they need. Google’s ability to continually refine their system to provide meaningful results is what has caused their business to thrive.

In the old days keywords were used to tell Google what is important on your page. People abused this by including any number of keywords and phrases on their page that had nothing to do with their product just to attract visitors.  Google has responded by ignoring the keywords provided by clients and instead generates what it believes your keywords to be by examining both the underlying code of your web page and looking at your content.

Beyond just generating what it believes your keywords to be from your content, Google scans your content. There is a positive correlation between well written content and Google rankings. When your website contains a large amount of a content about a topic Google feels more confident in serving your page as a result over competitors that have much less information about your product. Google wants the websites they serve as search results to be topical, up to date, and exactly what their users are looking for.

For those seeking advice on what to write just imagine you are selling someone your product. What is a new customer likely to ask, and what do they need to know? Who are the primary customers of your products or services? Why do they want or need them?

For our busy customers with no time to write, or customers who have trouble generating content, our Webgirl Technology team is happy to offer access to our on-staff copywriters.  They will work with you to generate up to 500 words of original content, for a nominal fee.  Once you have begun to generate content our 24/7 technical support can work with you to add it to your website.
Quality, original content helps you grow your business by increasing user confidence, providing a better user experience, and giving Google confidence in your credibility.

FAQ: How Do We Compare Against WordPress?

Webgirl Technology has been using WebSolutions by maWebCenters to develop websites since 2009. We chose to use this technology over others for several reasons. However, we often receive requests to support WordPress and have always turned down those requests for three main reasons:

First -  Security.  According to securi.net, during the first quarter of 2016, WordPress websites were the top most hacked sites in the world. You can download their full report here. Website and customer’s information should be secure and thus hosted with a secure server.

WebSolutions by maWebCenters servers have 99% uptime (better than Facebook even!) and have had zero security breaches in over 18 years.  We have an ultra-secure hosting facility with 24x7 security and incident monitoring, hosted on tiered, high performance Dell PowerEdge servers, protected from fire, floods, earthquakes, power outages, and other types of disasters.

Second – Time. The WordPress platform is comprised of individual plugins made by anyone who wants to make them. While this can be great because there is more variety, there is no way to know if it is a good plugin, if it is updated, plans to be updated, works well etc.  You could add a social media plugin to your site and then find it gone 6 months down the road because the developer of that plugin decided to take it down. More commonly than that, you use a plugin for a gallery, form or some other element on your website and then find it never gets updated which causes it to either stop working or need to be replaced. Their approach to building a site is to make you skim through hundreds of plugins to add to the platform to make your site work and then manage them all.

WebSolutions by maWebCenters has a website builder with a myriad of plugins built right in.  This
saves the customer time and frustration because there is no searching to do for which one to add.  Most importantly, it was natively built so we will maintain those plugins, update them and provide support 24/7 on them.  Finally, their platform is a website builder.  Ours is Digital Marketing Solution and comes with an incredible CMS (Content Management System), Customer Relationship Database, Domains, Emails, SEO Tools, Social Media Tools, Email Marketing System and other important Marketing Tools that help to promote the website in one easy-to-use client administration.

Third – Support. WordPress is built sort of like an “app store” which again is great for variety of plugin options, but not a very dependable route to go when building a website.  When you’ve finally chosen the plugin you want and add it to your website and it stops working, you can’t get support from WordPress because they didn’t make it.  You have to go to all the individual developers for support on all of the individual plugins you’ve used, which can vary.  Some of those developers will offer email support, some will offer forums but most completely disregard support all together.
WebSolutions by maWebCenters is built on service and support.  We truly consider ourselves in partnership with our clients and want to support them in their digital marketing goals.  We are not trying to just sell them some cheap hosting solution and then move onto the next customer.  We are here 24/7 (excluding US Major holidays) and available to help them with using all aspects of our Digital Solution to achieve their goals.
